🌄 Roxborough State Park: Denver’s Red Rock Escape

If Denver had a secret twin to Garden of the Gods, Roxborough State Park would be it — minus the long drive and plus a little extra tranquility. Just south of Littleton, this red rock wonderland is packed with trails that are as photogenic as they are walkable. Whether you’re in the mood for a quick stroll or a leg-burning summit, here’s your guide to the park’s five best hikes.

🥾 Willow Creek Trail (1.4 miles, Easy)

Perfect for beginners or anyone short on time. You’ll still get those jaw-dropping red rock views and, if you’re lucky, a flash of yellow from a Western Tanager darting through the oaks.

🥾 Fountain Valley Trail (2.3 miles, Easy)

Roxborough’s greatest hits trail. Expect towering red fins, flat paths, and the ruins of an old estate that whisper stories from the past.

🥾 South Rim Loop (3 miles, Moderate)

A family-friendly loop that rewards you with sweeping views of Fountain Valley. Benches along the way offer prime picnic spots.

🥾 Elk Valley Trail (4.8 miles, Moderate)

A quieter, lesser-traveled route with the chance to spot elk grazing in the meadows. Can be done as an out-and-back or loop.

🥾 Carpenter Peak Trail (6.2 miles, Moderate-Strenuous)

Your summit hike. From the top, you’ll see Denver to the east, Pike National Forest to the west, and the park’s famous red rocks below.

Know Before You Go:

  • No dogs allowed (your pup will have to sit this one out)

  • $10 park pass required

  • Weekends get busy between 10AM–2PM — consider an early start

  • In winter, bring traction for icy patches

With its easy access and “wow” factor scenery, Roxborough State Park is a must-visit whether you’ve lived here forever or just touched down at DIA. The hardest part will be deciding which trail to hit first.
