But paradise at 12,000 feet takes a little planning. Consider this your step-by-step game plan for squeezing every ounce of magic out of the park between now and mid-October.

1) Reserve Your Golden Ticket

Timed-Entry is back May 23 – Oct 14. Snag a slot on this website (they release exactly at 8 a.m. MT, so set that alarm).

🎯 Pro tip: Grab the “Bear Lake + Park Access” permit if you want the greatest hits—Bear Lake, Emerald, Dream, Alberta Falls, ALL the Insta stuff.

2) Pick Your Playground

Montane (7,800–9,000 ft) → Moraine or Horseshoe Park for elk-spotting & mellow riverside strolls.

Subalpine (9,000–11,500 ft) → Bear Lake corridor for green lakes, pine scent, and waterfall selfies.

Alpine (11,500–14,259 ft) → Drive Trail Ridge Road (a.k.a. “Highway to the Sky”) or Old Fall River Road and picnic on Mars…er, the tundra.

  • 🚌 Use the Hiker Shuttle from Estes Park.

  • 🌄 Flip the script—sunset in the west side’s Kawuneeche Valley is crowd-free magic.

  • 🍔 BYO picnic to skip Estes lunch lines.

Quick-Hit Ideas

  • One Day: Sunrise at Bear Lake ➡️ Dream Lake hike ➡️ Trail Ridge drive ➡️ sunset elk jam in Moraine Park.

  • Weekend Warrior: Camp at Moraine Park, bag Flattop or Chasm Lake, stargaze with a ranger, pancake breakfast in Estes.

  • Adrenaline Side-Quest: Rent a road bike and grind up Trail Ridge (48 miles, 4,000 ft gain) if your quads crave suffering 😉.
