If you’re looking to do some good (while also meeting fellow animal lovers), this one’s for you. From flexible foster gigs to helping out at weekend adoption events, we rounded up the best ways to volunteer with animals near downtown. If you’re an animal lover with a little extra time (and heart) to give, Denver’s got some fantastic ways to connect with critters and community—without needing to scrub a single kennel (unless you want to).

Denver Animal Shelter

Denver Animal Shelter – Offers everything from walking dogs to helping at events like vaccine clinics. Great if you want to meet other volunteers too.
MaxFund – A no-kill shelter that’s always looking for help walking dogs, socializing cats, or supporting outreach efforts.
Dumb Friends League – One of Denver’s largest shelters, with structured volunteer roles (like dog walking, adoption support, and transport).
Humane Society of the South Platte Valley – A flexible option if you need a more casual schedule—you can sign up for shifts when it works for you.
Cat Care Society – Located just west of town, they offer cat-focused roles and occasional outreach opportunities (perfect if you’re feline-inclined 🐱).
Rocky Mountain Puppy Rescue – Hosts weekly adoption events in Glendale and always needs helpers for set-up, dog cuddling, and logistics.

Most programs include a short orientation, and some offer unique roles based on your skills—like event planning, marketing, or community education.
